Outer Hebridees "Harris & Lewis"

Tuesday 12th August - 6 days ~ 5 nights

Escape over the seas to the Outer Hebrides – the islands of Lewis and Harris; islands that have for countless years protected western Scotland from the whole gambit of the North Atlantic weather. Our journey will take us to visit the communities of these western isles where the friendly people live an isolated and uncomplicated way of life. Stornaway, the administrative and main shopping centre, will be our base whilst on the islands. We will tour the Isle of Lewis, an island virtually treeless and made up of peat moorlands, grey rocks, sheer cliffs and lochans, but nevertheless full of interest. We will also visit the Isle of Harris, traveling through rocky ‘moonscape’ like scenery. The northern area of Harris is mountainous and rugged and the eastern area bare and rocky. The superb beaches on its western coast are a sight to behold. You may recall the recent TV series ‘Castaways’ whose island home for twelve months is just off the west coast and well within sight of this part of our tour.
Whilst on the islands we will be on a local coach, accompanied by a local guide, who will take us to most of the points of interest, including The Butt of Lewis, with its isolated lighthouse, The Trushal Stone and The Standing Stones of Callandish, as well as on a tour of the Harris Tweed Factory.
On both the first and last day of our holiday we will overnight in the Highland capital of Inverness, staying at The Palace Milton Hotel, which looks across the River Ness to the castle. Our journey to the islands will be by boat between Ullapool to Stornaway on both outward and return journey; visiting the gardens at Inverewe before boarding the boat on the outward journey. On Saturday we return to the mainland, where our Radley Holiday coach will meet us at Ullapool, to transfer us for our final night at our Inverness hotel, before returning home on Sunday.

Our comment: This will give a great opportunity to visit an area of Great Britain that is a community of its own. Visiting some remarkable pre-historic sites. The islands, which depend almost entirely upon crafting, fishing, tweed production and tourism, are noted for their strong Gaelic language and cultural traditions.

Your hotels: THE CABARFEIDH HOTEL Stornaway is known as the islands finest hotel. It is set on the outskirts of Stornaway in its own 8 acres of attractive gardens. It overlooks the historic Lews Castle grounds and the town’s golf course. All rooms are en suite well equipped and include hospitality trays, trouser press and multi-channel TV. Our stay will be on a half board basis.

Our comment: Over the years we have had requests to visit this part of Scotland, an area with its own remote beauty, and with many points of isolated interest. Inverewe Gardens is said to be one of the most beautiful places in Scotland, an oasis of exotic plants, bursting with vibrant colour – all of this on latitude more northerly than Moscow. The key being the availability of the Gulf Stream, a warm Atlantic current that flows along the west coast of Scotland.
